Devon Youth Symphony and Concert Orchestras (DYSCO)

October 6, 2011 § Leave a comment

The two orchestras provide an opportunity for young musicians from all over Devon to experience orchestral music. Bursaries are available for Torbay students and all students eligible for Free School Meals have their fees paid. Both orchestras rehearse on a roughly monthly basis and can attend a 3 day residential as part of the season. Both orchestras will perform in regular concerts throughout the year along with involvement in local and national events.

The Concert Orchestra is aimed approximately at Grade 4 standard upwards but, if less advanced players are keen and willing to have a go, this shouldn’t be a barrier. There is no audition as players are invited to try it for themselves. The repertoire includes film themes, light classics and any music with appeal to young orchestral players.

The Symphony Orchestra is for Grade 6 standard players upwards plays more demanding music including suitable movements from symphonies, orchestral suites and interesting works from a range of musical periods. Auditions may be necessary for some oversubscribed instruments but the aim is to make these as relaxed as possible.

Devon Baroque

February 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

Devon Baroque has established a strong reputation as the principal orchestra in the South West specialising in baroque and early classical music, played on period instruments and in appropriate style. The orchestra’s repertoire ranges from Biber to Bach and Boyce with performances in cathedrals, churches, concert halls and small, private venues. It has worked with international soloists such as Emma Kirkby, Michael Chance and Sebastian Comberti and helps to promote young musicians at the start of their careers. In addition to performing from its large repertoire of instrumental music, Devon Baroque collaborates with vocal ensembles and choirs. The size and composition of the orchestra reflects the demands of the repertoire, from a small chamber ensemble to a larger orchestra with wind players.

Devon Baroque promotes understanding of and engagement and active involvement in the world of Baroque music through its education programme, including workshops on Baroque playing style and composer ‘Experience’ weekends at Dartington Hall.
