ExTunes

August 31, 2010 § Leave a comment

ExTunes was set up in January 2006 by Marion Wood, the Director of Music at Exeter University, as a way of uniting the music societies on campus in the light of the closure of the music department. The organization includes a weekly council of representatives from the University’s music societies and an elected student committee that ensures the interests and concerns of the music societies are properly voiced to the Students’ Guild and the University.

Exeter University Choral Society is the largest choir on campus, and requires no audition. The choir incorporates both students and affiliate members from in and around Exeter, and strives to promote music both on campus and around the city. We perform a variety of classical pieces from Mozart to Vaughan-Williams, Bach to Brahms, and our work culminates in one concert at the end of each term.

Exeter University Symphony Orchestra is one of the University’s largest collective music societies. Each year, the orchestra puts on three concerts, one at the end of each term, including the traditional summer ‘Proms’ concert. Under the artistic direction of a professional conductor, Richard Gonski, the orchestra are able to attempt some major musical works. The orchestra holds auditions for all but its string section. The Chamber Wind Ensemble runs alongside the main orchestra and is unauditioned.

Exeter University Gilbert and Sullivan Society

August 24, 2010 § Leave a comment

Not only are we Exeter’s oldest amateur G&S society, but we are also one of the longest running student societies on campus, (the society started in 1968). Our aim is to produce every year a light operetta by W.S. Gilbert & Sir Arthur Sullivan. Membership is open to students at Exeter University by audition. If singing and dancing aren’t your thing but you’d still like to be involved, you can also join the backstage crew.
